City of Minnetonka, MN
Home MenuHome Business
Any business operated in a residential home is called a home occupation, or a home-based business.
While most home-based businesses are generally compatible within residential neighborhoods, the city has standards that allow these businesses to exist without negatively impacting surrounding properties. These are considered permitted uses and do not require any special approvals or permits.
Generally, the business must be located within the home and must not significantly alter the home’s visual appearance. Certain businesses that tend to increase in intensity and size beyond what is compatible with surrounding residential uses are prohibited. Examples include auto and appliance repair, service and sales; landscaping and maintenance; mortuaries and massage therapy.
