Police Explorers

Minnetonka Police Explorers Post #884 is a youth organization that offers basic law enforcement training and exposure for young adults (ages 14-21).

Members assist officers in daily duties and times of emergency, participate in community events and compete in law enforcement exercises at regional and national conferences. The explorer program is part of the Boy Scouts of America, Learning for Life division, and is open to both boys and girls.

Qualifications

Training

Explorers are trained in the following areas:

Traffic
Crowd control
First aid
Radio communications
Firearms safety
Patrol techniques
Writing reports
Search and arrest
Community relations
Traffic stops
Crime scene search
Hostage negotiation
Interrogations
Bomb threats

Once an explorer is fully trained in these areas, they are prepared to regularly ride along with officers.

Explorers also expand their training by attending regional and national conferences, which tests the explorers in practical situations.

Minnetonka Police Department Explorer advisors are Sgt. Heather Olson and Officers Armando Sanchez and Erin Spinks.

Community events

Become a police explorer

To apply to become a police explorer, complete a Police Explorer application and background information packet and return the completed packet to the Minnetonka Police Department, 14600 Minnetonka Blvd.

'First Nighter' event

Each fall the explorer post hosts a “first nighter” event where interested candidates can attend a meeting and learn more.
