Purgatory Penaz Red BarnIn 2001, Minnetonka voters approved a $15 million referendum to fund parks renewal and open space preservation. The Open Space Preservation Task Force established criteria to determine properties appropriate for preservation, and the city council and park board established prioritization and preservation alternatives for each of the properties.

One of the properties identified for open space acquisition is located at 17301 Excelsior Blvd., a single family residence with a barn. This 1.23-acre property is adjacent to Purgatory Park, a 158-acre community preserve. The Minnetonka City Council approved the acquisition of the property Jan. 7, 2013.

Barn Preservation

Staff ordered a structural review of the barn and will carefully consider renovation scenarios for a variety of recreational uses that will be considered during Capital Improvement Program planning. In addition to the open space value, early ideas for the site include programming space and picnic rentals.

Beginning in the spring of 2018, the home on the property will be removed due to maintenance issues. The structural contents of the home will be evaluated for recycling and reuse if possible. Staff is also looking into moving the home to an alternate location if feasible.

Thank You

The City of Minnetonka is grateful to Clarenze and Mary Penaz and family for their willingness to forever preserve this property and keep this iconic barn standing in Minnetonka.
